Nursing Assistant Career Description and Outlook
Certified nursing assistants (CNA) are personnel who serve as adjuncts to a hospital or nursing home’s professional healthcare workers. Patients who are unable to carry out activities of daily living on their own require the help of these nursing assistants. CNAs can also be hired by private individuals to provide home-based care. All CNAs are required to undergo compulsory CNA classes and only then are they qualified to work as a nursing assistant.
The job description of certified nursing assistants often include monitoring of vital signs, helping in patient ambulation, preparing meals, and assisting in bathing and other patient needs. They can also be delegated with the daily checking and setting up of uncomplicated medical equipment like suction machines. They may also be delegated with the collection of specimens like urine for routine medical tests. Those employed by private individuals usually have the added function of buying groceries and preparing food according to the dietician’s prescription. The duty of a nursing assistant is that of a caregiver and he/she is expected to perform everything expected of him/her as a healthcare professional and that is necessary for the patient.
Being a certified nursing assistant is a great stepping stone to a career in nursing because it allows you to get the necessary experience from being placed on the front lines of patient care at the same time you learn from being directly under the supervision of nurses. Also, this career path is particularly enticing because of its undemanding eligibility requirements and the relatively short period allotted for training to get certification. A high school or GED diploma or equivalent is often required from applicants. Typically, CNA classes last for 2 to 3 months at a community college or a healthcare facility. Discussions on basic concepts of anatomy and physiology, diet, and nursing skills are essential components of the curriculum for these CNA classes. To make the students technically adept and confident, skills lab and internships are also done intermittently. More importantly, since being a CNA requires patient interaction, therapeutic communication and customer relations are usually an essential component of CNA classes. Empathy and a desire to serve is an unwritten requirement for being a CNA, it is the difference between an average and a good nursing assistant.
In 2018, it is expected that the number of individuals being in this career will grow by 19%. This trend is probably because more and more families are becoming more partial to hiring certified nursing assistants to care for their elderly or sick family members at home instead of admitting them in the hospital or in nursing facilities. Salary range for CNA’s is pegged at $7-14. Their salaries are also contingent upon level of experience, seasoned CNA’s can get as much as $32,000 in a year.
